Description

This object is a trio of galaxies located in the constellation of Bootes at a declination of +35 degrees.

NGC 5614 is the primary galaxy at the center of the image. This galaxy is 200 million light years away and 2 arc-minutes in diameter, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 110,000 light years. This galaxy has a fascinating and complex structure. The core of this galaxy is slightly offset above and right of the geometric galaxy center. More disturbance is seen in the interesting dust lane further above and right, as well as the star stream plume in the same direction which extends oddly outward.

At the root of this star stream plume, Just above and right of the core of NGC 5614, is the bright stellar-like galaxy which is NGC 5615. This small 20,000 light year diameter companion is likely causing these disturbances of NGC 5614.

Above these two objects is the ring galaxy NGC 5613. This galaxy is twice as far away, at 400 million light years, and is not interacting with the other two. It is about 60,000 light years in diameter. The structure of this disk is also fascinating. It has a bright inner oval region, an oval mid-disk region with ansae at each end at an almost perpendicular orientation, and a faint outer ring which has the same orientation as the inner region.

The numerous distant galaxy clusters in the background are all about 2 billion light years away.
